xa0My Okidokeys smart lock completely stopped working some time ago. I tried to find a solution to fix the issue, and it seemed like the whole company is gone. Now I am stuck with the dead smart deadbolt. It was great and convenient when it worked, yet the smart devices require a constant update as the technology evolves every day. The problem is we just don't know how long the new startups and alike will last to support the things they have sold, which is the downside of the curious early adapters. Anyways, this set doesn't belong to 'smart home devices' category, yet sometimes that's what makes smarter and more convenient. Installing was quick and easy, I assume most of the people who can follow the instruction, will have no issues. Battery lasted about six months, but it will depend on the number of usages. Replacing the batteries was easy as well and I didn't have to reprogram the code numbers or anything, unlike some other number pad deadbolts. Overall, I am happy with my purchase. This is the 'smart' one. There is no need to pull out my cell phone when my hands full and try to unlock my phone with my fingerprint, and no need to go through pairing/repairing bonanza after the app update, iOS update, and all kinds of a software update. Punching in 4 digit numbers is all I need to unlock. There is no need to carry keys and the batteries last long time. I will probably stay with this set for a long time and I will see what kind of true 'smart' lock devices come out in the future.
Update, 2 years later: 2 stars added back. Second iteration has much better longevity and eats very little battery. The device has reliably opened and closed every time for 2 years. Original review: 2 stars knocked off due to poor reliability. This is my 2nd one (first one bought from Home Depot). The first one only lasted a couple years before the keypad gave up. I noticed some small differences between the new one and the previous one; hopefully kwikset improved reliability. In terms of performance, I've had almost 0 complaints from house members, so that's a good start. I was only getting complaints when batteries were low and needed changing. Unfortunately, this device is really not good at warning about the state of its batteries.
I already had a keyed, door handle lock, but for added security purposes, I decided to add this Kwikset 909 . I purchased it several yr's ago and not once, have I ever had 'buyer's remorse'. I am older and not overly brilliant , but I followed all directions (important) and installed it myself. I replaced my front door a year ago which required removing the 909 and reinstalling in the new door. Once again---no problems. It has always performed flawlessly----even though I have a full-glass, storm door in front of it which bakes in the hot Summer sun. I presumed the batteries would run down faster than normal b/c of all the heat, but that has never happened. I always get a year of 'work' out of 1 set of batteries. (I may not be smart or young, but I must be lucky, eh?). I heartily recommend this lock to one and all.
I got this deadbolt for the apartments I manage. They're great. The tenants love them. The ones who don't know how to use codes can still use their keys, and all they have to do is press the 'lock' button when they leave, then open the door with their key. Believe it or not, some people just can't get the hang of using codes, no matter how simple they are. And, some people don't trust them. I had purchased the wi-fi version for my own home so I can monitor my security remotely. However, the Kwikset 909 is absolutely perfect for the tenants. Anyone who wants a wi-fi version can get it from me, however, the 909 is fabulous. I highly recommend this lock.
I love this lock! I walk my dog every day and usually leave the door unlocked, because carrying keys is often problematic. Now I can easily lock the door every time I leave the house. It was easy enough to install. I kept the old door handle and it works fine with that. I thought I would be able to rekey it to use the keys for the lock I took out, but those keys weren't compatible with this lock. It is still a nice feature and is one of the reasons I chose this lock. I like that you can control some features with switches on the control panel. For instance, I don't want it to automatically lock. I also couldn't see the point of the green blinking light. So, I turned that off. I would definitely buy this lock again!
In the beginning, this was great. We originally had a version where the keypad had an accompanying thumbturn. This one was nice because we didn't have to go through that minor, but extra step, of turning it to unlock the door. However, we've been using this more electronic version for the last 3 months and are already on our 3rd set of batteries. With the other one, I think one set of batteries lasts at least 2 years.
My old deadbolt was starting to become loose so it was time for a replacement. I figure why not upgrade while I'm at it? I started looking into smart locks, but most of them either require you to buy some extra smart hub to connect, and/or installs over existing (dumb) deadbolt hardware. Or worse, some required a paid subscription! This provides a good middle ground - still lets you leave and lock without your keys, you can program it with multiple codes, and if the battery runs out it just turns into a normal lock you can open with keys. And no stupid smart phone app to deal with (meaning one less way to hack it). Install was a breeze, it only took me about 20 minutes.
This item came today and all I can say is wow easy to read directions . Very easy to install, I keyed 2 locks the same so easy and fast. I just bought 2 more today The Item shipped was actually model 910 looks the same but not sure the 909 has these features. that I really like. On the inside of your door of the lock has a knob that you turn open or lock and when locked it flashes a red light every 10 sec to let you know its locked. My door is down a long hallway so now I just have to look for the flashing red light to make sure its locked . it also flashes green when un locked.
I have rarely been this excited to order and receive something from Amazon or anywhere!! Great product!!! No more digging through my purse to find my house keys!! Just touch the numbers you've pre-selected and the deadbolt opens for you! Easy to lock as you go out; just hit the picture of the lock! We hired a handyman to install this as I have zero talent in that regard, but I'm still more than thrilled to have this on our front door!!!
Great compliment to my keypad door knob. Why do I want 2? Because when I have someone coming to walk my dog, I can give them the door handle code and leave the deadbolt off. Then at night, I can lock the deadbolt and only I have the code. It keeps me from having to change the door handle code all the time. It is also 2 codes that have to be broken when I set them both while on vacation. I hate keys and who knows who had the door keys before me or having to change locks if I lose my keys. This was fairly easy to install for a person who doesn't have a toolbox, but has a Phillips, flathead and hammer in a kitchen drawer.
I bought this for my new home. The main purpose was to eliminate the need for keys. It was a little difficult to program at first as my door is backward from the way the lock was intended. I had to do some google searching to figure out how to make it work but once I found the right one, it worked and we love it. My toddler grandchildren have their own code as does my housekeeper. One of my best purchases! My family loves it so much that I may have to buy one for my daughter too.
Nice solid dead bolt lock with some pretty good features. Easy to install with a phillips head screwdriver. Really liked the rekeying capability and it was easy to do. I like the feature to automagically lock the door after 30 seconds. Would have like the ability to alter the timing though, turns out 30 seconds is pretty quick! Also like the ability to provide a temporary code to someone. The only real issue I have with the lock is there are only effectively five numbers to select your code from. Each button has two numbers (1,2)(3,4)(5,6)(7,8)(9,0). Having a code with a 1 is the same as having a code with a 2. In this case, the code 1,3,5,7 is the same as a code of 2,4,6,8, or any code combination from button 1, button 2, button 3, button 4. You can compensate by have a longer code.
This makes entering the house so much easier with kids. No more fumbling around for a key in the dark and trying to fit it in the hole. The only problem I had was that I felt the lock was sticking because it made a weird noise. After some research, I found that the lock was set for a left hand door and I needed to set it for a right hand door. Once that little fix was done this thing worked like a charm. We have had this installed at our old house and only had to change the batteries about once per year. This has been in our new house for 3 months and so far the batteries are still working.
I have one of these at each of our homes. They are easy to install - just replaced the previous deadbolt, easy to program, and they are NOT connected wirelessly to the home or a smart phone. I'm sure most people see this as a negative but given how horribly insecure most IOT devices are, I did not want a lock that could easily be hacked. This is as close to a standard keyed deadbolt as you can get but with the convenience of a keypad. You have to change the batteries every six months or so but otherwise, it's been flawless. It's also bump-proof, which is important.
This is the second unit I've purchased; installing it at grandma's house for the grandkids. they love it and grandma loves it too! installation was smooth, although you have to choose the appropriate parts based on your particular door and locks. I swapped out the key cylinder and grandma uses her old key instead of using the new keys that come in the box. a great product!
Best ever! I had some experience with these at work (Model Home Center) and would highly recommend this one. The touch screen models tend to fail very quickly. Especially if the front of your home is exposed to eccessive heat. Easy to install. Love the rekey tool so you can use your existing keys. Put this on my elderly parents home so my family could easily check in on them. They love that they don't have to carry a key with them everywhere they go.
I had already bought one for the basement door. The product is fairly simple to set up. Changing the batteries is simply remove a couple of screws. I bought this to replace a broken deadbolt. It works great and can get into your home if you forget your keys. Would recommend.
I had to knock off one star because the parts that mount on the interior side of the door aren't actually brass, they are plastic with a brass-like finish. Other than that, this is a great lock. I installed the previous version (the Kwikset 907) in 2003 and it worked flawlessly for 13 years. It finally stopped working a few days ago, so I bought the predecessor to replace it. I think I'll probably get another 13 or more years out of this lock.
I installed this about 1-2 months ago. It works great. I put in used batteries and they are still going. If you push the lock button, then the buttons light up making them easy to see. I love the added peace of mind that I won't lock myself out. I always tended to keep several keys around (which I know wasn't safe) because I had a tendency to forget my keys in my house. It is also great because I don't have to make extra keys for when I ask someone to watch my pets when I go away. I just give them the combination and I can change it at anytime. I love it so much I am thinking of getting one for my back door as well.
Installation was a piece of cake took me about 15-20 mins to remove the old kwikset deadbolt and replace it with Kwikset 909. Went to youtube for better instructions, its been 3 days ive been using this lock and loving it. The only complaint I have is the lock mechanism makes a loud noise every time the door gets locked/unlocked. The smart key technology is freakin awesome.
This lock is very simple to install, program, and use. We purchased it in April of 2016 and it is more that 2 years later and it is still working wonderfully. I just had to change the batteries for the first time and it was very simple and intuitive. We have tried more complicated locks with wifi and remotely programmable and have always had issues. I don't usually have time to leave reviews, but I needed to do it for this product because it has worked so well. My expectations have been exceeded.
We've had this lock for 2 years now, and it is one of the best purchases we've made for our home! Lasted great, no issues. Looks nice, and it's so convenient for guests (and us!) to use.
If you have teenagers that lose their keys or forget to lock the door when they go out this is for you! This solved a HUGE problem with my teenage sons they would leave the house and forget to lock the door and my house would be unlocked all day. Or they'd lose their house key somewhere between school and home. (not sure how that happens). I love that you can program multiple codes this makes it great when you need to leave town and need someone to come feed pets but you don't want them to have your code forever AND no key to copy! We've had to change the batteries a few times but realized we put some cheap batteries in it so we bought the lithium batteries and those have lasted much longer!
We really like this lock set so far. It was easy to install, took maybe 15 minutes. You can set 8 different combos if needed. It will lock itself after 30 seconds, not sure if it can be set for a longer time, like maybe 60 sec, because, personally, that would be ideal. The sound it makes when it locks again is very loud and took some time to get use to.
I LOVE THIS! Have owned it for about 6 months or so and am still happy with my purchase and actually smile when I come home. PROS: Installation: I have no personal experience on this as I had a friend install it for me. But he said it was easy enough. Programming: It was relatively easy to program for different codes. The main code my husband and I use, then I set up a second code to give to my friend who periodically checks on my dog. A neighbor needed to do a home repair for us while we were at work so we were able to give him the code to get in instead of making arrangements to get a key to him. I can change any of those codes easily. Convenient all around. You can program it to auto-lock after a couple choices of specified times. We have ours programmed to automatically lock after 20 seconds. It's a nice feature, for instance, when you leave the house and your arms are full, it'll lock behind you. However, I'm going to turn that feature off. Recently I went outside to my car and pulled the door closed but left it ajar thinking I'd be back before the 20 seconds. I wasn't, and when I came back the lock was trying to auto-lock but kept hitting the door jamb. My fault--bad habit of not pulling it closed all the way. This smart key feature made it possible for me to re-key the lock myself to match the keys we already had, so there was no additional costs incurred to get new keys made. I plan to replace the back door of our house and get another of this lock, and I'll be able to re-key that one as well. CONS: The auto-lock and unlock is a bit loud. We have a small house and can hear the lock when one of us is leaving for work (the other is still sleeping). Not a deal-breaker, but worth noting. Note: It also goes into the lock position if the door is open, which we do a lot when the weather is nice and we want the sunlight coming in. Not a big deal, but it would be nice if it didn't. You just have to manually unlock it before trying to close the door. There was one time a few weeks ago that lock had a little blip and I couldn't get into my house (I haven't carried a key since getting this lock). No matter what I did, the lock didn't respond. When you push a button, you'll get an audible beep, but I was not getting anything. I thought, perhaps the batteries had already gone dead? After finally getting into the house via another door (waited for friend with my key), I unlocked the door from the inside. It suddenly "woke up" and began working again. Now I keep a key as a backup just in case, but haven't had to use it. MISC: The numbers are not lit up all of the time, but if you just push on the middle LOCK button first, it'll light them up.
Please don't hesitate to purchase this lock. It's a fantastic little gem! The instructions were so easy to follow. I had it installed and programmed in less than 30 minutes. You cannot go wrong with this!

I've installed quite a few smart keypad locks, and I inevitably wind up just using the keypad. In fact, I've resolved that this lock is better than even a very nice smart keypad lock, simply because of one basic issue: these locks rely on battery power, and they need to work multiple times, every day. The locks that connect to the internet, constantly talking to your wifi router, burn through batteries, take more batteries, and as a result are susceptible to surprising you with dead batteries. At any rate, I installed this particular lock in just a few minutes. If you're cutting into a door, that's a very involved process, but if you're not, just swapping out the parts, including the plate, is an easy process. The lock is lighter in weight than others I've used, but on the door feels and looks good. It's just a deadbolt. Hit the top button and the bolt closes. I also set mine up to lock automatically after a minute (the default is ten seconds). I punch in my code and the bolt unlocks in about one second. On the inside, there's a large plastic body that houses the batteries and has a simple latch. I've found that this design is much superior than the smart locks that contain the lever and the bolt, again because it uses less (no) power to lock from the inside). If you get three beeps when installing, take it out and make sure you have the bolt aligned correctly. It's intuitive, and therefore tempting to just install without looking at the instructions, which can cause hiccups. For me, installation and reliability are great. And I hate to beat a dead horse, but I know from lots of experience: the moment you start to hear a lower, slower pitch from the bolt closing or opening, go ahead and replace the batteries soon. This is the least expensive keypad lock I've ever used, and I really enjoy being able to go for a run through my neighborhood without bringing my keychain, and my wife loves that she never has to dig her keys out of her purse. In my opinion, it's simply not worth it to spend a couple hundred on a lock with smartphone features. It can seem so handy to get an alert when someone unlocks your door, but over time you won't pay much attention to that many alerts, and you may wish you had a lock whose batteries last many times longer. This is just more practical.
This may sound ridiculous but I really had a goal of getting rid of having to carry around a lot of keys. I finally achieve that goal this year between my new car have a pushbutton start and this new Amazon lock being my deadbolt. This is so much easer then a key. Plus it works for the whole family. No more kids losing a key and you feeling like you need to change the locks. All you have to do is change the code if you’re nervous it was given out. When we go away for the weekend and have somebody come over to let the dogs out. We just change the key code the pad the following Monday. it installs real easy and is ready to go. You can’t go wrong with this lock you should buy one.
When I first was reading the directions I got really worried, because it came with instructions on how to drill holes into a door etc. Luckily the holes that were already in my front door was sufficient, so I didn't have to do any of that extra work (I was trying to surprise my husband before he got home!). So I was able to install the keypad deadbolt myself fairly easily. It does need 4 AA batteries, I'll probably buy rechargeable batteries as I don't know how frequently I'll have to change them. That is the only thing that I have to get to make this keypad fully functioning. I do wish it came with its own handle though. I will have to now buy a new handle to make it look more aesthetically pleasing - currently the handle I have doesn't match too well with the keypad.
This matte black finish seems a bit closer to oil rubbed bronze than I prefer for black. Just slightly. I would say perhaps a bronze black. The design is simple and works well. The keypad has good buttons and they press well. I have used other ones that the buttons felt spongy and you didn't know if you pressed them hard enough or that they registered the press. These have a visual lighted and audible feedback. The deadbolt is easy to install in standard 1-3/4" doors with an 2-3/8" backset. Like most other locks you can of course expand the striker to accommodate a 2-3/4" backset as well. It is nice to see the AmazonBasics lineup expanding to include door hardware too. Good quality and a good price. 4 solid stars for this one from me.
I have a terrible habit of leaving home without my house keys and if I leave before my husband or kids do then I often return home to a locked door and no keys! Yes, this is 100% my fault but when I'm walking the dogs or just running quickly to the store then I don't want to carry keys. This has solved everything! It was easy to install and the quality is excellent. It is a heavy set, not cheaply made and the buttons light up for night time convenience. As an added perk, which I hadn't considered before ordering, I can call my neighbor to ask that she let my dog out and not have to worry about her not having a key! I also really love the design. I LOVE IT!
My husband installed this in less than twenty minutes. It took us longer to decide on which codes we wanted. Very easy to put in the codes. We picked one for guests, one for mom, one for dad, one for grandma. How cool is that? The buttons are easy to push in and they light up when pushed. It comes with two keys if you ever had the battery run out. I have never had that happen before. Over all this was a great purchase for our front door. I fully believe all doors should have a key pad for kids and parents! No need to have a key.
This was easy to install and had good, easy-to-follow instructions. It took me about 10 or 15 minutes to install in existing door that was correctly prepped. Make sure to pay attention to the wire routing to avoid pinching. Programming was simple and the directions were very clear on the programming process.
